NAGAON: Amidst the promise of the State Government to supply power 24x7 across the State, due to acute shortage of power as well as frequent loadshedding of electricity in Nagaon town for over a fortnight here, an irate mob of locals went on a rampage on Saturday night and gheraoed the Haibargaon power sub-station for over hours.

During the stir, the irate mob shouted various slogans against the officials of Nagaon APDCL as well as the newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer of Nagaon APDCL here. The irate mob alleged that the on-duty official of the power sub-station allegedly neglected his duty. Most of the time, in a drunken state, he frequently cuts off the power supply for hours without reason any and often fails to reconnect the power supply in the areas after hours .

Meanwhile the local Haibargaon police rushed to the spot at night itself and bought the situation under control by persuading the irate mob, sources added. While speaking to this correspondent here, the newly-appointed CEO of Nagaon APDCL, Pranjal Katoky said that the demand for power was increasing day by day. But the government or the department concerned was yet to generate power as per demand in the State, he said, adding that the power production unit of the Bongaigaon district was temporarily defunct due to which the production as well as supply of power in the State had been hit.

Besides, he said the government and the department concerned were also not in a position now to purchase power from outside the State to supply to power consumers 24x7.
